Turning Urgency into Action
Community Foundation Connects with Local Efforts and Responds to SNAP Pause.
As the federal government shutdown continues, mounting pressure on local food systems in Franklin, Hampshire, and Hampden counties threatens to deepen food insecurity across Western Massachusetts. With potential disruptions to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, local food providers are bracing for a surge in need among residents already struggling to afford basic groceries.
In response, the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts is directing $100,000 in emergency response funds to bolster regional efforts that ensure food remains accessible to those most affected. At the same time, the Community Foundation is engaging funding partners in ongoing conversations to develop a unified and sustainable response.
“This is a moment that calls for urgency, compassion, and coordination,” said Megan Burke, CEO for the Community Foundation. “We know that in times of uncertainty, our greatest strength lies in how we show up for one another.”
Over 125,000 residents across the three-county region served by the Community Foundation rely on SNAP to meet basic nutritional needs. Without federal funding, the ripple effects would be swift and significant. Local food banks, pantries, and meal sites could see demand spike dramatically in the coming weeks.
The Community Foundation is working with funding partners and local leaders to align strategies and resources. The foundation encourages the public and private sectors to join in supporting frontline organizations, including:
- The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts
- United Way of Franklin & Hampshire Region
- United Way of Pioneer Valley
- Local food pantries, mutual aid groups, and community-based nonprofits
The Community Foundation is also keeping a close eye on emerging needs for other essential supports, including fuel assistance, which is becoming increasingly urgent as families navigate rising winter costs. It will continue to coordinate with local funders to identify longer-term solutions that can withstand future disruptions.
