Reflection and Renewal: A Look at Where We’re Headed
It’s common practice for community foundations to pause occassionally and ask an essential question: Are we responding to the needs of our region in the ways that matter most right now? This practice of reflection and renewal has long been part of the Community Foundation of Western Mass’ approach. It’s how we ensure our work remains grounded in the realities of our communities and responsive to a changing world. We last began a comprehensive look at our strategic approach in 2019, and were proud then to announce the vision that has guided us since: the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts is committed to increasing equity and opportunity so that all who live in our three-county region have access to a satisfying quality of life.

As many of you know, community needs are not static. They shift with economic conditions, state and federal policy decisions, environmental pressures, and the lived experiences of our neighbors. Every few years, we take a closer look at those shifts, examine where needs have intensified, where new challenges have emerged, and where our resources can make the greatest difference. We use what we learn to refine our strategic priorities and chart a path forward.
Last year, we once again began this process, aided and supported by La Piana Consulting. As part of our strategy development, La Piana worked closely with us to design a survey to engage nonprofit leaders, students, fund advisors, donors, and other community partners from across our 3-county region and from a multitude of sectors. The survey was co-designed in collaboration with our leadership team and our Strategy Task Force, a mixed group of staff and board members, dedicated to ensuring that the perspectives of many residents of our region informed the process, and the Community Foundation’s current impact and future work.

Several strategy retreats created space for listening, reflection, and thoughtful dialogue about the opportunities and challenges ahead. These retreats allowed us to examine emerging themes collectively, align around shared priorities, and refine a strategic path forward that is both responsive to community voices and grounded in our mission and values.
Over the coming months, our team will continue to engage with community members, nonprofit partners, donors, and other stakeholders. We are reviewing what we’ve learned so far, including from our Community Impact Team during our last several rounds of Flexible Funding, reflecting on where we’ve seen meaningful impact and naming where gaps persist. While we’re not yet ready to share a full plan, we’ve determined that our strategic vision should remain our north star, recognizing that increasing equity and opportunity requires a long-term commitment.

We aim to continue to be thoughtful and deliberate, as we center the voices and experiences of those closest to the challenges we seek to address. In the months ahead, we’ll be sharing insights from the process and offering glimpses into the questions we’re exploring together. Our formal strategic plan and areas of focus will be introduced in mid-July, with more detail to follow about how they will shape our grantmaking and partnerships. We look forward to inviting all members of the community to consider how they might join us in advancing these priorities.
I’m grateful to be doing this work alongside such a committed and engaged community. Your curiosity, trust, and willingness to stay connected as this process unfolds are what make our shared impact possible. I invite you to follow along with us this year as we listen, learn, and look ahead.
